Carry-On Luggage

Spirit Airlines allows all passengers to bring one personal item on board with them free of charge. Personal items include a purse, briefcase, laptop bag or other small item that can be carried onboard by hand. Since these items can’t be stored in overhead bins or under your seat, Spirit suggests you bring a backpack or small duffel bag as your personal item. All other bags are classified as either checked luggage or carry-on luggage. Spirit defines checked luggage as anything larger than 36 linear inches (length + width + height). If it's smaller than that, it counts as carry-on luggage. Checked and carry-on bags are stored in cargo holds, which aren't heated or cooled. For safety reasons, no outside food or drinks are allowed in these areas. In addition to charging fees for extra bags, Spirit also charges additional fees if you don't pay online before your flight. For example, if you try to check more than two pieces of luggage at an airport kiosk without paying online first, you'll have to pay $100 per piece at the airport—and there's no guarantee they'll accept credit cards at that point. So always make sure to go through checkout before arriving at an airport!

Checked Luggage

On most flights, you can check one suitcase that is up to 50 pounds (23 kg), plus a personal item such as a purse or briefcase that weighs up to 10 pounds (4.5 kg). All bags must fit in overhead bins or under your seat. On some routes, including those with Delta Connection carriers, oversized items or overweight bags may not be accepted as checked luggage. Your ticket may state Carry-On Only in these cases. Spirit Airlines Baggage check in will charge you $50 for an additional bag weighing up to 50 pounds on flights within North America. A fee of $75 per bag will apply if you wait until boarding time at your departure airport before paying. If your bag is too large to fit into an overhead bin or under a seat, it will cost $100 each way to check it. This applies even if there are no extra charges for weight or size. For example, a duffel bag that measures 22 x 14 x 9 would cost $100 each way because it exceeds our size restrictions.

Additional Fees

The fee to check a bag ranges from $35 to $100 depending on when you book your flight. Once at the airport, if you have bags that don’t fit in a standard overhead bin or under your seat, it’s an additional $50 per extra bag. For these larger bags, customers must call ahead so they can be loaded into an oversized bin. Those looking for more convenience can pay more upfront and choose their seats in advance (between $15 and $40), but need to make sure their bags are smaller than 44 inches. If not, they will be charged as if they were checking two bags. Spirit also charges $100 to bring a pet on board.
