Introduction

Outcome-Based Education (OBE) is a transformative philosophy that redefines education by focusing on what students can achieve rather than what is taught. In Indian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), such as those offering a 4-year B. Sc in IT or 4-year B.Tech in Computer Science, the PO-CO Evaluation Report (POCOER) is a cornerstone of OBE. It enables institutions to measure, analyze, and enhance the attainment of Course Outcomes (COs), Program Outcomes (POs), Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs), and their alignment with Program Educational Objectives (PEOs).  

Far from being a final step, PO-CO evaluation is the beginning of a continuous improvement journey, as emphasized by quality management pioneer Joseph Juran: “What gets measured gets managed, and what gets managed can be improved.” By integrating data from assessments, student feedback, and stakeholder inputs, the POCOER drives evidence-based improvements, ensuring compliance with the National Board of Accreditation (NBA, General Manual 2023), the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC, Revised Framework 2020, updated 2025), and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.        ●       POs and COs: POs define graduate competencies (e.g., PO2: "Problem Analysis"), while COs specify 

              course-level achievements (e.g., CO3 in Data Structures: "Design efficient algorithms") .

       ●       PO-CO Mapping: A matrix (Strong: 3, Moderate: 2, Weak: 1) links COs to POs/PSOs with clear justifications 

       ●       Direct CO Attainment: Calculated from assessment scores (e.g., 60% marks threshold)

       ●       Indirect CO Attainment: Derived from perception of learners about attainment of COʼs and stakeholder feedback. 

              The NAAC Student Satisfaction Survey (SSS, 2.7) provides contextual insights but does not directly measure 

              CO/PO attainment.

       ●       PO/PSO Attainment: Aggregated from CO attainment data

       ●       Stakeholder Feedback: Incorporates inputs from faculty, alumni, and industry.

The following actions address root causes identified in the POCOER, aligning with NBA Criteria 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and NAAC Criteria 1, 2, 4, 7, while making OBE adoption practical through pedagogical and systemic improvements:


1.      Misaligned Curriculum

        ○    Revise syllabi to include industry-relevant projects (e.g., Agile methodologies for software engineering).

       ○    Refine PO-CO mapping with stakeholder input to ensure relevance.

       ○   Pilot changes in one semester and measure CO attainment improvements.

        ○    Adoption Tip: Form a curriculum review committee with industry experts to align with NEP 2020ʼs multidisciplinary goals.


2.      Inadequate Faculty Training
