I'm not entirely sure if there is a way to separate the core elements that make Diablo enjoyable apart from the mechanics that make it a free-to-play commercialization. If it is, Blizzard and NetEase have not yet found the answer. They've created a mobile-friendly Diablo game that's simple pleasant, fun, and very generous initially. But if you spend enough time with it there's no way to deny that the core of the game has been cut, chopped up, and given back to you piecemeal.
Diablo Immortal isn't nearly as bad as a game that is free to play Diablo could have been. It's true that the game will slash you every turn , with a variety of microtransactions, but they are all in difficult to understand currencies. You'll have to grind for victory especially if you choose not to spend money on the game. Your reward for all this is a flabbier replicating Diablo II's tale.
Yet, despite every flaw, I am a fan of Diablo Immortal more than I hated it. It still has everything that makes this series great, from its action-packed gameplay, its wide-ranging customization of characters and its great sense of place, to its ever-growing collection of exciting loot. Actually, Diablo Immortal even has a few clever gameplay twists which I'm hoping Blizzard retains for Diablo IV.
If you feared that F2P mechanics could undermine Diablo Immortal Your fears were justified. However, if you were hoping that Blizzard could provide a solid mobile spinoff to fill the gap until the next installment in the series then you've not hoped in vain.
