There is a common misconception among medical
students about the importance of USMLE Step 1 versus USMLE Step 2 CK and Step 2
CS. Many med students believe that once they’ve aced Step 1, it’s smooth
sailing through the clinicals. The idea that Step 2 CK is easier than Step 1 is
also widespread, leading many students to neglect the necessary preparation for
Step 2 CK.
These myths and misconceptions are partly driven by the fact that, for many years, Step 1 scores were considered the top determining factor for whether students were interviewed for residency or not. USMLE Step 2 CK and Step 2 CS, on the other hand, were placed a little lower on the list of priorities. Each year, test takers achieve better and better scores in Step 1, largely due to the growing emphasis on its importance. This means that each year, students who take Step 1 are faced with an incredible amount of competition, particularly when it comes to being matched for residency. And with Step 1 going pass/fail in 2022, Step 2 exams will become more important than ever.
With a limited number of places in residency programs, USMLE Step 2 CK is quickly becoming a way for students to stand out in a sea of competition. If everyone is already doing exceptionally well in Step 1, then Step 2 CK is the next best way to improve your chances of being placed. In this way, Step 2 CK is just as important as Step 1.
Just as adequate preparation and time management are crucial parts of getting great scores in the Step 1 exam, so it is with Step 2 CK. In fact, it may be even more important during Step 2 test prep. Since Step 2 is usually taken during the busy period of clinical rotation, it requires a little more effort and organization (this may be yet another reason for its neglect). Students who are determined to give Step 2 their best shot can benefit from devising a detailed study plan, committing enough time to it daily, and enlisting the help of an experienced tutor. Together, these elements can be the difference between a stressful, unproductive preparation period, and one that leads to success.
As you take on the daunting task of preparing for USMLE Step 2 CK, remember to treat it with as much respect as you did Step 1. It could very well be the thing that gets you into the residency of your dreams!
